Jafar al Sadeq was the sixth in the line of Imams and was considered the successor of Muhammad. The fifth Imam before him was his own father, Al Baquir.
During his reign, Al Sadeq did much to formulate and make more or less permanent, Shiite religious doctrines. He tried to avoid political conflicts and involvement as much as possible, but he nonetheless was opposed by many of the then-sitting Caliphs.
Many Shiite sources believe that Al Sadeq was poisoned at the behest of Caliph Al Mansur around A.D. 765, who felt challenged by Al Sadeq’s strong claim to the position of Caliph. After death, Al Sadeq was buried in Medina in modern day Saudi Arabia until the tomb was destroyed in 1926.
