Though located in the Middle East where most people are Muslim, Lebanon has a very old Maronite Catholic Christian population. It makes up about a third of the population of the country. Thus, Christmas is a public holiday here and much celebrated by many.
Some of the old Christmas traditions still carried on in Lebanon include building a nativity crib in one’s home and making it a focal point of family prayer, attending midnight mass on Christmas Eve, and meeting with relative and friends to enjoy super-strong coffee and sugar-coated almonds together.
In Beirut, there are many resorts and many modern, Western Christmas traditions that are kept. You will see elaborate poinsettia displays, light displays, public Christmas trees, and appearances of Santa Claus.
